The V-PRIZE plans to challenge members of the commercial space community to complete a feat reminiscent of Charles Lindbergh's record breaking non-stop flight from New York to Paris, France that he achieved in 1927. Spaceflight companies will compete to become the first in history to create a vehicle capable of launching from Virginia and land in Europe in approximately a hour. The V-PRIZE will provide a necessary catalyst to innovation, spawning breakthroughs in point-to-point suborbital spaceflight and the aerospace industry.
The detailed rules and prize amount will be forthcoming in late 2008. No deadline rule has yet to be set but the Spaceflight Liability and Immunity Act expires July 1, 2013 unless extended by the Virginia state legislature.
